Bottom Line: Pay as you go, subscriptions, free tiers and hidden costs: how email verification pricing really works and how to estimate your total cost.

Short answer: the price per check is only part of what an email verification service costs. The total depends on the pricing model (pay as you go, subscription or free tier), minimum purchases, whether credits expire and whether duplicates and "unknown" results are charged. Compare tools by total cost for your own list, not by the lowest number on the homepage.

Disclosure: MailInsightX is our product. Figures for other vendors come from their own published pricing pages as read in October 2026, and they change often. Confirm everything on the vendor's site before you buy.

The Four Pricing Models

Almost every email verification service uses one or a mix of these.

1. Pay as you go

You buy a block of credits and spend them as you verify. It suits occasional cleaning because you pay only when you need it. The questions to ask are the minimum purchase and whether the credits expire. For example, ZeroBounce lists pay-as-you-go from $39 for 2,000 credits, and Bouncer lists tiers such as $8 for 1,000, $60 for 10,000 and $400 for 100,000, with a statement that purchased credits do not expire.

2. Monthly or annual subscription

You pay a recurring fee for a monthly credit allowance. This usually lowers the per-check cost if you verify regularly. Check what happens to unused credits: some plans roll them over and others do not. ZeroBounce lists a $99 monthly subscription with a 10,000-credit minimum, for instance.

3. Free tier

A small monthly or one-off allowance for testing. ZeroBounce lists 100 credits a month, Bouncer lists 100 free credits for new accounts, and MailInsightX includes 250 Standard and 10 InsightX+ credits per month on its free plan.

4. Add-on packs

One-off credits to cover a project or a spike without changing your plan. MailInsightX offers optional InsightX+ add-on packs; see the pricing page for current amounts.

Why Two Vendors With the Same "Price per Check" Can Cost Different Amounts

Cost factorWhat to ask
Minimum purchaseIs there a smallest pack that exceeds your list?
Credit expiryDo unused credits disappear after a set time?
DuplicatesAre repeated addresses in a file charged?
Unknown resultsAre results the tool could not determine charged?
Re-checksDoes re-verifying a temporary failure cost a second credit?
API callsDoes each real-time call cost the same as a bulk check?
ExtrasAre finder, monitoring or warmup features bundled and billed?

A tool that charges for duplicates and unknowns can cost noticeably more than a similar one that does not, even if the headline price is lower. Bouncer and ZeroBounce both state on their pricing pages that unknown results are not charged, and Bouncer adds that duplicates are free. Ask every vendor the same questions.

How MailInsightX Pricing Works

MailInsightX uses two separate credit pools, and each plan includes both:

  • Standard credits pay for fast checks: syntax, domain and MX records, disposable domains, role-based and gibberish patterns and parked domains.
  • InsightX+ credits include everything Standard does and add a live check with the recipient's mail server, which is what enables a confirmed Valid result and Catch-All (Risky) detection.

Plans, per month in USD, with yearly billing saving 35%:

PlanPriceStandard creditsInsightX+ creditsAPI access
Free$025010No
Starter$99,0001,000Yes
Business$3959,0005,000Yes
Enterprise$199500,00030,000Yes

The API's POST /v1/verify endpoint always uses one InsightX+ credit per call. See the credit pools guide for how each pool is spent. Always confirm current figures on the pricing page.

How to Estimate Your Real Cost

Use this simple method.

  1. Count your addresses and remove obvious duplicates yourself.
  2. Decide how often you verify. One-off cleanup points to pay as you go, and monthly signups or sends point to a subscription.
  3. Add real-time volume. Signup forms use one check per new address.
  4. Add re-check volume. Temporary results like greylisting may need a second pass.
  5. Compare total cost for a year across two or three tools, including minimum purchases and expiry.

Then weigh the cost against what clean data returns. Our ROI worksheet shows how to estimate savings from fewer bounces and a smaller contact count on your email platform.

Hidden Costs Teams Overlook

  • Expired credits. Buying a large pack for a one-time project and finding it lapsed before the next campaign.
  • Paying twice for the same list. Verifying a file, then verifying it again after small changes.
  • Over-buying depth. Using deep checks on every address when a fast pass would remove most bad ones. A two-tier approach, fast checks first and deeper checks on the addresses that matter, helps here.
  • Under-buying depth. Skipping live checks on high-value outreach lists and paying in bounces later.
  • Tool sprawl. Separate subscriptions for verification, finding and monitoring that you barely use.

Free Plans: What They Are Good For

A free allowance will not clean a large list, but it is the best way to compare tools fairly. Verify the same few hundred addresses everywhere and review the disagreements. Choose a sample with known bounces, a few role addresses and some catch-all domains. Our guide to the top 10 tools lists options with free allowances to try.

Is Cheaper Always Better?

Not by itself. A low price is good if the tool labels risky addresses clearly and does not charge for results it could not determine. It is not good if it passes catch-all addresses as safe, because bounces and complaints later cost far more than the saving. Read the catch-all guide and test with a realistic sample.

A Practical Buying Checklist

  • Is there a free plan or free credits to test?
  • What is the smallest purchase?
  • Do credits expire, and when?
  • Are duplicates and unknown results charged?
  • Is API access included, and at what rate limit?
  • Can you export results with status labels?
  • Can you cancel or downgrade without friction?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does email verification cost?

It varies widely by vendor, volume and model. Published examples range from a few dollars per thousand addresses on pay-as-you-go ladders to monthly subscriptions, and many vendors offer a free allowance. Compare total cost for your list.

Is pay as you go or a subscription better?

Pay as you go suits occasional cleaning. A subscription usually works out cheaper if you verify every month, as long as unused credits roll over or you use the allowance.

Do email verification credits expire?

It depends on the vendor. Bouncer states its credits never expire, while others expire credits after a period, so read the terms.

Do verifiers charge for unknown results?

Some do not. ZeroBounce and Bouncer both state on their pricing pages that unknown results are not charged. Always confirm in the terms.

Does MailInsightX charge for the API separately?

API access comes with paid plans, and each /v1/verify call uses one InsightX+ credit from your plan. The free plan has no API access.

What is the cheapest way to clean a large list?

Run a fast pass first to remove clearly invalid, disposable and role-based addresses, then use deeper checks only where they matter. Compare total cost, including expiry and charged unknowns, across a few tools.
